WooCommerce stands among the most obvious go-to choices for eCommerce selling. As a plugin for WordPress, WooCommerce simplifies the act of selling online with a selection of powerful features packed into an easy-to-use environment.

Unlike other sales solutions, WooCommerce is an ecommerce plugin, so you need a pre-existing site before you can add the functionality to take payments. Fortunately, WooCommerce is very easy to use, and adaptable enough to suit a range of companies.

As wonderful as WooCommerce can be, of course, it’s also not going to be the right tool for everyone. If you don’t want to use a WordPress plugin for your sales strategy, there are tons of other eCommerce options out there. That’s why we’ve created this list.

Below you’ll find a list of WooCommerce alternatives designed to give you the wide selection of simple and impressive tools you need to make your fortune online.

So, in this article, we're talking a little bit about WooCommerce, as well as our 13 favorite WooCommerce alternatives.

Are you ready to get stuck in? Great! Let's get to it.

Who's WooCommerce?

WordPress is one of the most eminent CMS (Content Management Systems) in the world. In fact, it boasts 67% of the market share, and WooCommerce is WordPress' official digital store plugin. So, let’s talk about its pros and cons.

In comparison to its competitors, this open-source software empowers you to achieve much more with way less effort, for a pretty low cost.

With WooCommerce you get access to their:

  • Marketplace plugins
  • An integrated blog
  • Editable themes
  • You can export your accounts
  • Mobile optimized web pages
  • Your clients can create user accounts
  • You can accept payments in multiple currencies

There are just a few of the many features WooCommerce has to offer!

WooCommerce Pros and Cons:

WooCommerce: The Pros 👍

Okay, here's a quick rundown of the perks WooCommerce users enjoy:

Most WooCommerce features are free: WooCommerce comes with a GPL (General Public License). This means that it's designed so everyone with a WordPress website can use it.

WooCommerce comes with tons of themes: You can personalize your store with one of the many WooCommerce templates on offer. There are loads of high-quality options that are entirely free! Alternatively, there are ‘premium' themes available. But, you'll have to pay for those. This is a major selling point for WooCommerce. If you want your web design to stand out from the crowd, you don't have to be an expert. Customizing these themes is pretty intuitive.

It's easy to use: Expanding on what we've just said, WooCommece is incredibly easy to use. But, if you do get stuck, you can quickly find videos to guide you through the process. Best of all, it's not just simple for you as the merchant, but Woocommerce is also renown for its incredibly consumer-friendly interfaces. After all, nobody wants to shop on a complicated website. That's a surefire way to damage your conversion rate!

Woocommerce: The Cons 👎

Not everything is free: Yes, all the essential extensions are for free. However, if you want access to more advanced features, you'll need to buy these specific add-ons for your store.

3. Square Online

square online - woocommerce alternative

Square is a name more commonly known for its point-of-sale equipment and card readers. If you’ve ever run an offline store or pop-up shop, you’ll probably feel right at home with Square. Equipped with its own free online store builder, Square Online makes it quick and simple to get online, or even create a combined online and offline strategy.

If you’re already comfortable with the Square experience, then you can expect the same level of simplicity and support in the online store builder. The builder itself is free to access, but you will have a small transaction fee to pay for each transaction.

Notably, Square also comes with a range of plugins you can use to simplify and enhance your online selling strategy. However, compared to other solutions, you may find that this product has a slightly higher learning curve.

Let’s look at Square’s pricing plans

As mentioned above, Square Online is free to use if you’re using Square already. You don’t have to pay anything to set up your account. However, you will pay a fee every time someone uses your online store to buy something online.

The transaction fee can make things a little difficult for some budding business owners, as its often difficult to predict how much you’re going to pay each month.

The transaction fees start at around 2.5% per payment, so they can add up if you’re not careful. You can also pay extra for upgrades to your store, and the prices for this will depend on the functionality you need.

  • Advanced Commerce ($40 per month): You can launch and manage abandoned cart email campaigns, your customers can use gift cards, you can distribute and sell subscription-based products, and much, much more.

But most notably, Ecwid delivers some of the best free ecommerce features. If you're using Ecwid for business, this will set you back $35 per month. This bundle permits you to add up to 2500 products to your store, register two staff accounts, and you'll get access to both chat and phone support.

If you already have an online store somewhere else, never fear. BigCommerce helps you to migrate your store and import products from another platform, using their bulk uploaders tool.

Now, let's talk about their plans:

7. Magento

Magento is another excellent alternative. It has loads of free features to help you run and manage your online store, it's secure, and it's very flexible. Magento allows you to segment your customers so you can personalize the marketing materials you send to your audience. Plus, it boasts an easy-to-use interface, which makes administrative work much more manageable.

Magento also has tons of plugins and templates to choose from too! But, it's worth noting, their paid-for plugins are costly in comparison to their competitors. Plus, they're reportedly not as easy to use.

They have two leading platforms, the Magento Community Edition, and the Magento Enterprise Edition. The first option is free! But, rest assured, you still get access to a large number of Magento's features. Whereas, the second plan grants all the perks Magento has to offer. It's best for larger enterprises and used by many prestigious brands. Magento's Enterprise Edition starts at $22,000. So, you'll need a large budget!

It offers free themes, but some of their paid-for ones cost up to $2,000, and extensions to improve the overall functionality of your site range from $50 to $500!

What users love most about OpenCart is that they can do lots of things without spending any money. If you know HTML, PHP, or CSS, you can easily modify your site to meet your exact tastes.

But, unfortunately, customer support is minimal due to the fact it's free. Plus, there aren't many options in terms of themes, which is a bit of a drawback.

Good list. Keep in mind that when considering OpenCart, there is a fork of it called Avastta. There are some nice benefits of this version. In addition, many of the Open Source CMS have some eCommerce plugins. Such as Expression Engine, ProcessWire, Drupal, etc.
